Program
The course will develop some topics in General Pathology that are preparatory to understanding the basic mechanisms of disease. General Pathology lies at a critical juncture, at the intersection of basic and clinical science. The course therefore aims to establish the essential links between clinical manifestations and fundamental mechanisms, facilitating an understanding of the conceptual basis of disease. Outline: The following will be explained: The general concepts of disease, pathology, and etiopathogenesis; basic cellular pathology; elements of oncology; immunity and inflammation. Outline: 1) General Part a) Introduction to General Pathology: scope and aims of the discipline b) Disease: definition; causes (determinant, adjuvant, occasional); pathogenesis; course (relapses, recurrences); outcomes (recovery, chronicity, death); diagnosis (signs and objective examination, symptoms, and anamnesis). 2) Cellular Pathology a) General concepts: is disease an expression of cellular damage? b) Degenerative changes in cells: Causes (genetic, nutritional, chemical, physical, oxygen deficiency, living agents). Reversible and irreversible cell damage, cell death. Morphological changes in cells related to damage: various aspects of degeneration and necrosis c) Changes in the cellular steady state: Cellular steady states Molecular changes (hypertrophy, hypotrophy, atrophy) and their causes Cellular changes (hyperplasia, hypoplasia, aplasia) and their causes d) Alterations in cellular differentiation processes: Metaplasia, anaplasia, dysplasia 3) Oncology Definition of neoplastic cell Benign and malignant tumors Natural history of tumors: promotion, growth, progression, general effects on the organism Metastasis 4) Inflammation a) General concepts: usefulness of the inflammatory process b) Acute inflammation: local and general manifestations of inflammation; causes; pathogenetic mechanisms (the vascular component, the leukocyte component and chemical mediators). Exudate and types of inflammation (erythematous, serous, catarrhal, purulent, fibrinous, hemorrhagic, necrotizing). The consequences on the organism (abscess, phlegmon, fistula, adhesions, synechiae, effusions). c) Chronic inflammation: causes; pathogenetic mechanisms; granuloma and granulomatous diseases.
