Academic calendar

Learning outcomes
The main objective of the course - developed through lectures, class discussions, group work and possibly the contribution of experts - is to make students acquire the general skills of cultural anthropology linked to the world of health and disease. Both the typical methods of the discipline and the tools of the ethnographic approach in medical and health contexts will be illustrated. Particular attention will be paid to specific sectors of anthropology that may be useful for the work of nurses in psychiatric contexts and through the analysis of specific case studies, tools and interpretations will be provided to relate to cultural diversity in relation to the body, to health and suffering. Attention will also be paid to the anthropological reading of the recent phenomenon of Covid19.
EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
understand and critically analyze the main issues of cultural anthropology, in particular in its declination in medical anthropology
master the specific concepts and language of the discipline in relation to the general and medical context in particular;
know how to use or tool of ethnographic investigation in relation to the medical context.
grasp and interpret the characters and transformations of the world linked to health and disease even in intercultural and school contexts and in comparison with realities, through the ethnographic approach.
develop an anthropological outlook, a reflective attitude towards one's own cultural positioning and a relational posture capable of understanding and relating to each other and any cultural diversity

Brief historical overview of the discipline.
Brief historical overview of the discipline in relation to the medical context.
Concept of culture: identity in contemporary society and the meaning of belonging.
The methodology of anthropological investigation: ethnography and ethnographic investigation.
The methodology of medical anthropology and the discourse around health and disease: case studies compared.
Methodological tools to carry out research on themes, problems and meanings of cultural processes in multicultural societies
Ethnography in the medical field: how to use the anthropological methodology. Professional use and use for the profession.
The methodology of anthropological investigation: how to enhance it in the hospital and healthcare world.
The body, incorporation, being in the world through the body.
The human reaction to the Covid 19 pandemic
The 5 senses and observation in medical disciplines mediated by anthropological knowledge

Examination Methods
The evaluation will consist of two parts: 20% of the evaluation will be entrusted to the group presentation of an ethnographic case present in the bibliography under the item case studies; 80% on the answer to two open questions during the examination procedure on topics covered during the course and on the mandatory texts
The ability to structure an integrated, coherent and clear discourse that is based on a reflexive and critical problematization of the subject matter of the question will be assessed and that shows to establish pertinent links to the themes present in the reference literature with examples, also practical personal experiences, together with the internalization of the specific language of the discipline.
