Learning outcomes

The course’s aim is to teach students, in line with the proposals of the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, on the promotion of oral health and the prevention of oral diseases in children and the theoretical skills required to complete a professional oral hygiene session with pediatric age patients.

Program

-Pregnancy: foetus development and risk factors. Oral manifestations during pregnancy and favouring factors for oral diseases. Main changes in oral cavity hormonal and physiological assets. Oral pathologies during pregnancy: gingivitis, periodontitis, gingival hyperplasia, epulis gravidarum, tooth decay, cervical defects (enamel erosions). Favouring factors for oral diseases during pregnancy. Pregnancy complications. Role of periodontitis in pregnancy complications. Essential nutrients during pregnancy.
Recommendations for neonatal oral health promotion (2014).

-Oral health promotion from prenatal to neonatal phase. Daily and professional oral hygiene in pregnancy. The pregnant woman in the dentist’s chair. Dental sessions scheduling. Oral health promotion and oral diseases prevention from 0 to 2 years: breastfeeding and the nutritional value of milk.; role of breastfeeding in oral cavity developement; how to prevent direct transmission of bacteria from mother-to-child oral cavity; nutrition implementation and E.C.C. (Early Childhood caries) prevention ; fluoroprophylaxis; daily oral hygiene. First dental visit. National guidelines for oral health promotion and oral prevention in the early ages (2013).

-Paediatric dentistry and dental phobia. Fear-management tecniques. The paediatric patient: first approach, daily and professional oral hygiene in different age groups: 0-2, 2-6, 6-13 and over 13 y.o. Pathogenetic links beteween fever and tooth eruption.

-Oral hygiene in 6-12 y.o. patients and after 12. How to describe and identify malocclusion risk factors. Most common bad oral habits: finger and/or pacifier sucking, lower lip interposition, infant-style swallowing, oral breathing.
Caries risk assessment: cariogram. How to draw up a personalized oral prevention plan (PIP).

-The orthodontic patient. Occlusion, malocclusion and malocclusions classification according to Angle. Dental and periodontal health: how to prevent complications before, during and after treatment. Oral hygiene devices for fixed /removable appliances. Daily and professional oral hygiene for removablee and fixed devices. Recurrent oral complications during orthodontic treatment. The role of the dental hygienist within the dental team.

-The sealing of grooves and pits. Anatomy of grooves, pits and fissures. Different sealants. Indications and contraindications to sealings.
Materials and equipments. Operating procedures.
How to use tubber dam. Historical notes. Advantages and contraindications, materials and equipments, different sheets and different hooks. Application techniques.
Ministerial Guidelines (November 2013).

-The adolescent patient. Role of the dental hygienist in oral prevention. First approach to the adolescent patient. Oral health and nutrition (dental decay and enamel erosions). Oral health and eating disorders. Dental plaque, gingivitis, periodontal disease. Role of tobacco, alcohol , drugs and piercing on oral health.. Oral cancer: early signs and symptoms. Dental trauma management.
Fragile patient (patient with special needs). Different levels of cooperation. Training requirements of the hygienist dealing with special-need patients. Role of the dental hygienist in primary and secondary prevention. Daily and professional oral hygiene.

-Notes of embryology on craniofacial development. Embryological development of the tooth. Postnatal skull growth and development of the dental arches.
Tooth development complications and risk factors. Dental abnormalities in eruption, number, structure, location, position, volume, shape, growth. Oral trauma. Facial growth defects: cleft lip, cleft palate and cleft lip and palate. Risk factors and classifications. Oral aspects. Physical and general aspects. Oral hygiene sessions in cleft lip and palate patients..
