Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Program
ELEMENTS OF CHEMISTRY (from basic knowledge) The structure of the atom and subatomic particles; electronic configuration; periodic table and periodic properties of the elements; chemical bonding: molecules and ions; intermolecular forces. Solutions and concentration of solutions, acids and bases; pH and buffer solutions. Elements of organic chemistry and preparatory biochemistry: classification of organic compounds: functional groups; hydrocarbons; alcohols; ethers; thiols; amines; aldehydes and ketones; carboxylic acids; esters and anhydrides. BIOCHEMISTRY
1. Constituent elements of living matter: the polymeric structure of biological macromolecules.
2. Structure and function of proteins: classification of amino acids; peptide bond; the structural levels of proteins; fibrous proteins; globular proteins; hemoglobin and myoglobin: structure, function, factors influencing oxygen binding, hemoglobin variants; enzymes: classification, role in chemical reactions, coenzymes, regulation of enzymatic activity.
3. Concepts of bioenergetics: metabolism; chemical transformations in the cell; reaction balance and spontaneity of metabolic reactions; ATP as an “energy exchange currency”; oxidation-reductions of biological interest.
4. Structure and metabolism of carbohydrates: monosaccharides and disaccharides, polysaccharides, glycoconjugates; glycolysis and its regulation; gluconeogenesis; notes on the pentose phosphate pathway; and glycogen synthesis.
5. The citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria; synthesis of acetyl-CoA; citric acid cycle and its regulation; respiratory chain and electron transport; synthesis of ATP.
6. Structure and metabolism of lipids: structural lipids and biological membranes; cholesterol; reserve lipids; lipid digestion and β-oxidation of fatty acids; ketogenesis; notes on the biosynthesis of fatty acids.
7. Metabolism of amino acids: notes on gluco- and ketogenic amino acids, transamination, oxidative deamination, urea cycle.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The teaching method used in this teaching is exclusively frontal. The lecture slides will be made available on the course Moodle page as study support. Students are advised to choose a Biochemistry book from those indicated in the Bibliography sheets of the University Library System.
Learning assessment procedures
Written exam consisting of 16 multiple choice questions (8 fundamental and 8 in-depth) and 1 open question
Evaluation criteria
To pass the test, students must demonstrate an adequate understanding of the knowledge of the topics in the program, the ability to reason and individually re-elaborate the notions acquired. The grade is expressed in thirtieths and the test is considered passed if the evaluation obtained is greater than or equal to 18 out of thirtieths.
