Learning outcomes
General aims:
Learn the conceptual basis of drug mechanisms of actions in order to understand how physio-pathological events in patients can be modified by therapeutic approaches and how drugs and physiotherapy may interact on a same subject
Know the mechanisms of action, the effects, the adverse reaction and the therapeutic significance of classes of drugs relevant in cardiology
Specific aims:
Goal of this module is to provide the student with the scientific knowledge required to:
• Understand the mechanisms of action of drugs responsible of their beneficial and adverse effects,
• Learn how clinical evaluation is applied to the study and industrial development of drugs,
• Know the rules governing drug-cell interaction and pharmacokinetics.
• Understand the rules of a rational approach to therapy
• Know the effects and the clinical use of the classes of drugs active on the cardiovascular system and relevant in the specific professional context.

Programme of the course
Drug-receptor interactions, effect generation and mechanisms of adaptation to drug action; relevant terminology in clinical settings and basic aspects of clinical studies of drugs.
Pharmacokinetics: ADME, differences between routes of absorption, terminology and most relevant pharmacokinetic parameters. Modification of therapeutic protocols due to diseases, other drugs, genetics and nutrients
Mechanisms of action, therapeutic and adverse effects, indication and mode of use of inotropic agents (cardiac glicosides; PDE inhibitors; dobutamine, dopamine)
Mechanisms of action, therapeutic and adverse effects, indication and mode of use of ACEi inhibitors and ARB/sartans
Mechanisms of action, therapeutic and adverse effects, indication and mode of use of diuretic agents
Mechanisms of action, therapeutic and adverse effects, indication and mode of use of vasodilators: nitrates and calcium antagonists
Mechanisms of action, therapeutic and adverse effects, indication and mode of use of anticoagulant and antiaggregant drugs (NSAIDS)
Mechanisms of action, therapeutic and adverse effects, indication and mode of use of agents used for the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemias
