Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide the basic knowledge to understand the
functions of the various organs of human body on the basis of cell physiology and the main mechanisms of regulation of the function of organs and apparatuses.
At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate knowledge of the basics of the functioning of the human body and use this knowledge in the biomedical field.
Program
• Introduction to human physiology and definition of homeostasis.
• Biophysics of cell membranes: resting membrane potential, equilibrium potential, action potential and its propagation.
• Mechanisms of excitation-contraction coupling and mechanisms of muscle contraction.
• Anatomical and functional organization of the nervous system: electrical and chemical synapses, inhibitory and excitatory synapses, motor system, autonomic nervous system, somatosensory system and reflex arcs.
• Cardiovascular system: basic mechanisms of cardiac automatism, cardiac cycle and electrocardiogram, nervous regulation of the heart pumping, cardiac output and mechanisms of blood pressure regulation.
• Respiratory system: gas laws, pulmonary ventilation, gas exchange and transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, respiratory centers and the genesis of respiratory rate, chemical regulation of respiration.
• Renal System: glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption and secretion, the concept of renal clearance, the role of the kidney in salt, water and acid-base balance.
• Gastrointestinal system: mechanisms of liquid and nutrients absorption, the role of the salivary glands, pancreas and liver, motility in the gastrointestinal tract.
• General features of the endocrine system and description of the main functions of the hormones produced by the pituitary gland, the thyroid, adrenal glands and pancreas.

Examination Methods
Quiz with multiple choice questions and answers and eventual oral exam. Both exams will focus on the topics of frontal lessons and will assess the knowledge of the main mechanisms of regulation of the physiology of the various organs and apparatus.
