EQUIPMENT AND QUALITY CONTROL IN RADIOTHERAPY To provide the basic elements on the equipment and its use in Radiotherapy with reference to quality controls and Technician operative role. ONCOLOGY Providing the tools for the comprehension and the approach of the main medical neoplastic diseases in cancer patient. RADIOTHERAPY To provide information on technological solutions used in Radiation Oncology as well as on specific programs of quality assurance. RADIOTHERAPY TECHNIQUES The student, at the end of the study path, must be able to: - describe the main concepts of Radiobiology, the characteristics of different ionizing radiations used for tumors's therapy (gamma rays, X rays, adrons) and their interactions with the biological tissues - describe the concepts of RBE (Relative Biological Effectiveness), LET (Linear Energy Transfer), Build Up, therapeutic ratio (TCP\NTCP) and therapeutic window in radiotherapy - describe the operation of a linear accelerator for radiotherapy (LINAC) and its components - describe the set-up phases to aim the oncologic target describe the beam delivery techniques of a LINAC with MLC (multi leaf collimator), included static and arc techniques - describe the operation and the beam delivery system of a Tomotherapy equipment - describe the operation of a TPS (Treatment Planning System) and the advanced techniques of planning nowadays used - decribe set-up and IGRT during treatment - describe, in general, the main special techniques such as Stereotaxis, IORT (IntraOperative RadioTherapy), TBI (Total Body Irraiation), Brachytherapy, Protontherapy) and the latest technological innovations in the radiotherapy field.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final exam will consist of a written test followed by an oral discussion if clarification is needed regarding the written test. Scores will initially be assigned out of thirtieths, which will then be normalized based on the number of credits awarded for the module. The final grade will be a weighted average across the different modules.
