- Acquisition of general knowledge on the biology and clinical behavior of malignant tumors
- Acquisition of the basics in terms of set-up of a patient undergoing radiation treatment
- Acquisition of a general idea about the work of a radiographer in radiotherapy
Program
- Definition of radiation therapy (RT).
- Mechanisms of action of RT.
- The radiobiological bases of RT: high LET and low LET radiations; fast response and slow response tissues.
- Curative and palliative RT. Exclusive, pre - operative, post – operative RT.
- External, metabolic, intra – operative RT; brachytherapy.
- Phases of radiotherapy planning. CT simulation. RT steps: simulation, planning, verifications. Definition of GTV, CTV, PTV. Dose constraints: definition and examples.
- Evaluation of the response by Imaging.
- CT - PET in RT: diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, response assessment. Main types of cancer for which CT – PET is used. - The range - knife, definition and instructions.
- Cyber - knife.
- Stereotactic radiotherapy: definition and indications; Intra and extra – cranial stereotactic RT.
- Intensity modulated RT.
- RT with heavy particles (protons and carbon ions).
- Intraoperative RT in breast cancer: physical, technical and dosimetric aspects.
- Tomotherapy.
- Examples of diseases treated with RT (laryngeal carcinoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, medulloblastoma, total body irradiation in patients with leukemia).
