Learning outcomes

This course will develop specific topics of General Pathology, which are fundamental to the understanding of disease mechanisms. General Pathology is a discipline at the crossroad between basic science and clinic. The course will therefore establish the essential links between clinical manifestations and fundamental mechanisms, facilitating the understanding of basic concepts of disease.

Program

1) General Part
a) Introduction to General Pathology: generalities and scopes
b) The disease: definition; causes (determinants, coadjuvants, occasionals); patogenesis; disease course (relapses, remissions); disease outcome (healing, chronicisation, death); diagnosis (clinical signs, symptoms, medical examination, anamnesis).

2) Celular pathology
a) General concepts: disease as an expression of cellular damage
b) Degenerative alterations of cells:
- Causes (genetic, nutritional, physical and chemical agents, oxygen lack, living agents).
- Reversible and irreversible cellular damage. Cell death.
- Morphological alterations of cells due to cell damage: degeneration and necrosis.

3) Alterations of cellular steady state:
a) Types of cellular steady states
b) Alterations of the steady states (hypertrophia, hypotrophia, atrophia) and their causes
c) Alterations of cell differentiation: metaplasia, anaplasia, displasia

4) Oncology
a) Definition of neoplastic cell
b) Benign and malignant tumors
c) The natura history of tumor: promotion, growth, progression, general effects.
d) Metastasis

5) Immune system
a) Organisation of the immune system
b) Mechanisms of the adaptive immunity
c) Hypersensibility reactions.
d) Autoimmunity.

6) Inflammation
a) General concepts
b) Acute inflammation: local and systemic manifestations, causes, pathogenetic mechanisms.
c) Chronic inflammation: causes; pathogenetic mechanisms, granuloma and granulomatous diseases.
