Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding:
1. Knowing and understanding the conceptual, methodological, and cultural bases to promote a phenomenologically orientated research on the theory of affective experience; 2. Knowing and comprehending the importance of affective experience for a philosophy understood as exercise of transformation; 3. Knowing and understanding the meaning of emotional sharing for the care relationship and for the formation process of person.

Applying knowledge and understanding:
1. Knowing how to reread and interpret the process of formation of the person in the perspective of a philosophy of affects; 2. Knowing how to interpret the problem of emotional experience in the contemporary cultural and social context; 3. Knowing how to rethink the meaning and motivations of educational and pedagogical practice in the light of affective experience.

Program

The course title: Philosophy as an exercise in transformation and the theory of exemplarity
The course aims to take back to a philosophy understood as an exercise in transformation and develop it further, starting from Socrates’ maieutic tradition and focusing especially on the exemplarity of the other and its function in the formation process of the singularity. Subsequently, the course will tackle the thesis of the mother’s exemplarity, considering Spitz’s research on the affective deprivation of children in institutionalized settings.

The recorded lectures are an integral part of the examination.
Students are invited to contact the lecturer to discuss any doubts, queries or questions concerning their preparation for the examination.

Didactic methods

Only part of the lectures will be video-recorded and made available on Moodle. However, an organic and coherent series of recordings will be devised, also incorporating material from other lectures and conferences, in order to provide non-attending students with an adequate introduction to the course. These recordings form an integral part of the programme for non-attending students.

Learning assessment procedures

In the assessment of the examination, particular consideration will be given to: 1) the possession of a thorough knowledge of the main specific topics developed during the course; 2) the ability to develop an autonomous and personal reflection, expressed in relevant and accurate language, on the theoretical implications of these topics.
The assessment of learning outcomes requires all students, whether attending or not, to pass an oral examination. The subject of the examination will be the texts chosen from those in the syllabus and the topics addressed in the lecture. Non-attending students will refer to the video recordings.
A written paper, intended as a writing exercise, can also be brought to the oral examination. The paper will be counted with a mark from 0 to 2, which will be added to the mark for the oral examination. The paper, of approximately 20,000 characters (3000 words/10 pages), must be submitted by e-mail at least five days before the discussion. In Word, the file must be labelled with your SURNAME, NAME, and TEACHING TITLE. The paper should be considered a reasoned list of the parts of the texts in the programme that have touched you most or that have otherwise aroused your interest. The latter should be placed in inverted commas indicating the page number to avoid confusion between one's comments and the quotations. The paper's final part should be devoted to a short chapter of 'Personal Reflection' of a couple of pages in which you can refer to your own experience or other texts. It is advisable to send the teacher an initial version of the paper for initial feedback.

Evaluation criteria

The oral examination will test the consistency of the knowledge acquired and the ability to rework that knowledge independently.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The grade will consider the knowledge acquired and the ability to rework it originally.
