Learning objectives
The main objectives of the course are: 1-to understand the operating principles (advantages and limitations) of the main equipment necessary for a correct functional evaluation of physical exercise and human movement; 2-to attain a good competence in order to select the adequate instrumentation and the appropriate experimental methods for the acquisition of biomechanical and physiological variables. Therefore, lessons (both frontal and laboratory) are planned to approach the instrumentation for: - motion kinematic analysis (photocells, 2D traditional video cameras, 3D motion capture systems); - dynamic analysis of movement (load cells, baropodometric insoles, dynamometric platforms, measurement of pedaling force, accelerometers); -measurement of bioelectric signals (surface electromyography, galvanic response ...); -ultrasound analysis of muscle-tendon mechanics (ultrasound). Some useful questionnaires will also be presented, in the scientific panorama, for the functional evaluation of an athlete (in full or referring to individual body segments). For each instrumentation, in addition to the data collection, the main steps for both analysis and processing of the data could also be provided. Infine, basic tools will also be provided for a correct statistical analysis of the data collected. Each topic will be addressed with particular attention to the preventive, re-educational and rehabilitative context, and trying to "adapt" the theoretical notions to the different categories of pathologies.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge of physics and mathematics.
Basic knowledge of movement biomechanics.
Program
Systems for kinematic analysis of human movement (photocells, traditional video cameras, 3D motion capture systems)
1. Acquisition of kinematic data during walking, running and jumping tests
2. Analysis and processing (including graphics) of these kinematic data (joint angles, energies, signal derivation)
Systems for dynamic analysis of human movement (load cells, dynamometric platforms, pedal force measurement, accelerometers)
1. Acquisition of dynamic data during walking, running, jumping, pedaling and static tests
2. Analysis and processing (including graphics) of these dynamic data (Ground Reaction Forces, step duration, signal integration, COP pattern)
Systems for the measurement of bioelectric signals (surface electromyography, galvanic response ...)
1. Acquisition of bioelectrical data during walking, running and jumping tests
1. Analysis and processing (including graphics) of these electromyographic data
Systems for ultrasound analysis of muscle-tendon mechanics (ultrasound)
Basic statistical analysis of the collected data and discussion of the results obtained
Examples, also in the field, of preparation of experimental set-ups, with identification of the most suitable technologies and methods for the different experimental contexts
Adaptation of tests for functional assessment also to special populations
Bibliography
Didactic methods
Both theoretical lessons and laboratory experiences are planned, to test first-hand the technologies and methods for functional assessment in the preventive and adapted context.
Learning assessment procedures
A written exam (mandatory) is expected.
The written exam will consist of 8 open questions regarding the preparation of experimental setups for functional evaluation of the human movement, the characteristics of the instruments and the basic data processing procedures.
Evaluation criteria
Each question is worth a maximum of 4 points. Since there are 8 questions, a maximum theoretical score of 32 points is expected (= 30L).
