Learning objectives
One of the main job opportunities for graduates in preventive and adapted physical sciences concerns the rehabilitation context, in which they can easily find themselves in contact with users suffering from degenerative pathologies or acquired brain injuries who, in addition to motor disorders, also present psychological, cognitive and behavioral deficits. These deficits, if not known, may represent a limit to the effectiveness of the proposed motor re-educational intervention. The objective of this elective course is to provide basic theoretical/practical knowledge on psychological and cognitive deficits, necessary for patient management in a rehabilitation setting.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prerequisites are required.
Program
The first part of the course will cover the following topics:
1. General overview of cognitive and behavioral deficits that affect different functions:
- attention,
- memory,
- language,
- executive functions,
- orientation.
2. Description of the neurobiological correlates underlying cognitive alterations in various pathologies affecting the motor sphere:
- Parkinson's disease,
- acquired brain lesions,
- functional motor disorders.
The second part of the course includes workshops on the following topics:
1. In-depth analysis of the main psychological assessment tools (with particular reference to mood disorders) and cognitive functions (standard tests) aimed at promoting the recognition of psychological and cognitive deficits .
2. Effective communication strategies in managing the relationship with the patient suffering from these disorders.
3. Evidence on some strategic approaches that leverage neuroplasticity mechanisms with particular reference to their impact on the rehabilitation of motor functions.
