Learning outcomes
The module aims at developing the concept of microbial biodiversity and to provide knowledge about the techniques for its study in relation to the identity and typicality of vine-wine production. These knowledge and skills are useful because the student can also have an active part in the technological transfer of scientific knowledge on microbial systems for product and process innovation in the vine-wine supply chain.
The student must:
- Know the main microorganisms of the supply chain and their role in the identity and quality of the wine-vine production.
- Know the procedures and the theoretical bases of assigning a name to a microorganism, in order to be able to link it to its functional characteristics.
- Be able to critically evaluate the results of the various techniques that can be used in the study of the microbial biodiversity of the supply chain.
Program
Microorganisms in the production chain, from soil to bottle: identity, distribution and impact. Techniques for the analysis of microbial biodiversity: culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches. Introduction to microbial taxonomy: bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi.

Double degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
