L-LIN/01 - HISTORICAL AND GENERAL LINGUISTICS

II semestre - sede Trento dal Feb 12, 2018 al May 31, 2018.

Learning outcomes

The seminar aims to inform students about a specific subfield of contact linguistics. The goal is providing participants with: a) knowledge of the main situations of linguistic contact; b) knowledge of the criteria for identifying linguistic contact; c) the ability of analyzing specific situations of linguistic contact in urban areas, with a particular focus on Trentino.

After the seminar participants will be able to:
1. report about the most relevant studies on linguistic contact;
2. define criteria for identifying contact phenomena;
3. recognize and discuss phenomena resulting from linguistic contact;
4. compare various situations of linguistic contact;
5. evaluate the role of contact with respect to phenomena of linguistic change;
6. discuss various examples of linguistic contact in the local urban environment.

In terms of broad competences, the active participation in the seminar will help students: i) learn how to discuss a scientific subject within a group; ii) organize a presentation on a scientific subject, describing collected data and providing a reasoning for the results; iii) write a short paper on a specific topic applying the correct textual criteria.

Program

Prerequisites:
Students should be familiar with base concepts and units of linguistic analysis.

Contents:
1. A definition of linguistic contact
2. Examples of linguistic contact in the history
3. Contexts of linguistic contact today
4. Linguistic contact and multilingualism
5. Multilingualism and linguistic diversity
6. Urban repertoires today.
7. The situation in Trentin cities.

Teaching Methods:
Six interactive lectures followed by nine meetings during which students will present a topic.
After each lecture a file containing the main aspects will be published online.

Other references will be provided at the beginning of the workshop.

Examination Methods

The evaluation of participants considers:
i) frequence and interaction in the class;
ii) oral presentation;
iii) short paper (5 pages) on the topic presented;
iv) oral examination on two topics selected by the students.

Students non attending the workshop must pass a written exam (12 open questions on given references; duration 60 minutes).

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
