Learning outcomes

The course aims at analysing some of the main themes of political philosophy, with special attention to the political concepts of modernity (State, citizenship, sovereignty...) and the challenges it is facing in the present.

At the end of the course the student will be able to: identify, reconstruct and explain the philosophical subject examined during the course, knowing how to contextualize it both historically and systematically; to identify, reconstruct and present in a convincing manner the argumentative strategies exerted in the philosophical contexts examined during the course; to independently organize the acquired knowledge and the results of the analysis carried out, with appropriate references to the literature; to re-elaborate the acquired knowledge through the production of a written philosophical paper, referring to one of the texts specifically indicated in the program and related to the monographic subject of the course.

Program

Prerequisites: general notions of modern history of ideas, general notions of modern and contemporary history.

Contents:
Lesson 1-5: General Introduction to Max Weber's Political Thinking
Lesson 6-10: Analysis and commentary on "Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism"
Lesson 11-15: The History of the Effects of the Weberian Thesis on Protestantism and the Modern World

Teaching Methods: lectures based on the interpretation of the text; in depth analyses of modern political concepts and problems of their actualization. Attending students will be required to actively intervene in class with presentations and/or papers.

Double degree

The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.

Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
