Learning outcomes
Within the course of the master's degree program, the course about "Sources for historical research pursues" the objective - shared with the other teachings - to enable the student to critically evaluate a historical testimony, reflecting on the concept of document and analyzing different types of historical sources: written sources of various kinds, oral sources, iconographic sources. The examples proposed in class will refer to both the medieval age and the modern and contemporary age. Practical exercises and lessons in the archives are planned. At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate to be able to autonomously evaluate the potentialities of the different historical testimonies for the reconstruction of the past.
Program
The ‘Sources for historical research’ module will start from the ways historical knowledge is built and from the concept of document, to illustrate, in relation to different historical periods as well as to different historiographic approaches, some types of sources and the challenges involved in their use. Sources for demographic, economic, social, gender, political, judicial, religious, intellectual and cultural history will be illustrated. Special attention will be paid to sources for oral history. The documentary value of images and objects will not be overlooked. As far as possible, we will also aim to invite experts to lectures and organise guided visits to libraries and archives.

Double degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
