The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Learning objectives
Acquisition of knowledge and skills in the historical analysis of the sciences and their impact on the political and social environment of a given epoch.

Program
"Philosophical liberty": in Galileo and in the 20th century science.
The course first aim is to explore the salient moments of the human and intellectual experience of the great Italian scientist with particular emphasis on the battle of Galileo for the freedom of culture and science against the disciplinary instances coming from the church and the state. The second part of the course will be focused on 21th century science and the circumstances in which researchers must operate.

Didactic methods
The working method will consist in the analysis of selected passages from the Galilean work and in the discussion, in seminar form, of the texts and themes that appear most relevant in relation to current research problems.
Learning assessment procedures
The examination will take place as an interview and will consist of the discussion of at least two topics of the program using as a basis for reflection the Galilean texts discussed in class. These texts are all included in the volume edited by Michele Camerota indicated as a reference text. For the second part, students are requested to read and learn the content of three essays uploaded in e-learning (BUCCHI, MERTON 1, MERTON 2).
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation will take into account the level of understanding of the texts and the problems they deal with, the clarity and logic of the exposition, the ability to personally rework the contents.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade is unique and will take into account all aspects of the work done by the student, at home and in the classroom.
