Program
Module: STORIA DEL CRISTIANESIMO E DELLE CHIESE
-------
Germanus was bishop of Auxerre approximately between 420 and 450. What we know about him can be read in a biography written by the priest Constantius of Lyon around 480, upon request by his bishop Patiens, in order to celebrate Germanus’s holiness and deeds. Through a critical reading of the biography – one which addresses the specific features of the writing as well as of the ecclesiastical and political context in which it was formulated, considering that this context differs from that of the portrayed character – we aim to reconstruct the possible models and dynamics which partook in shaping the bishops’ power in V-century Gaul.
