Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with the tools and knowledge necessary to understand how the media ecosystem has influenced political communication during the Twentieth Century. After a brief methodological introduction, the course will explore the use that has been made of the mass media in the process of "consensus building" under specific political regimes, as well as the ways in which the mass media themselves and their languages ​​have become a fundamental part of social life, with particular attention to the processes of political socialization. At the end of the course, the student will have acquired a clearer knowledge of the importance of the media system on political communication, also useful for understanding the present and future evolution of both.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge of Italian history from 1945 to 2020

Program

In the first part, the course aims to provide students with the fundamental tools for understanding the history of television in Italy, both in terms of its offerings and its reception, and thus the interaction between society and the medium itself. In this sense, it aims to offer a different and stimulating perspective on contemporary Italian history through one of its most important protagonists: television. In the second part, with a partial reversal of perspective, the course will retrace the evolution of the ways in which history and its narrative have become a fundamental element of Italian television, through their "popularization" and their treatment in a variety of expressive forms. Going beyond individual programs, the course aims to trace the narrative trends that have influenced them, from the beginnings of television in Italy to more recent times. PLEASE NOTE: Attendance will be verified by signing in class. To be eligible to sit the final exam as an attending student, students must have attended at least two-thirds of the classes. Anyone unable to attend the course in person due to concurrent and VERIFIED teaching or work commitments is asked to contact the instructor via email.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is oral and consists of one question per each of the three books included in the syllabus. For attending students, the exam procedures will be communicated and agreed upon at the beginning of the course. In any case, they will include a reduction in the number of texts to be studied in exchange for the submission of a written essay.

Evaluation criteria

The main evaluation criteria will be:
- the ability to contextualize the course topics within the overall reconstruction
- the ability to condense into the answers (and into the essay, for those attending) what has been learned from the three books
- the level of maturity developed
- the use of appropriate and scientific language

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

For non-attending students: the grade, expressed out of thirtieths, will be the result of the oral exam;
for attending students: the grade, expressed out of thirtieths, will be the average of the thesis grade and the oral exam grade.
