Academic calendar

Learning outcomes
Acquisition of an adequate skill as well as historical-methodological, historical-factual and historical- conceptual competences, for a comparative and interdisciplinary understanding (history, law, political science) of the main innovations introduced by the modern Constitutions of the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries.
Program
The course is organized in two parts.
The first part is devoted to the history of political institutions between the 19th and the 20th centuries. The focus will be the European framework, although other geographical and political contexts are taken into consideration. In particular, the lessons retrace the rise and crisis of the liberal systems, the emergence of the emergence of the democratic constitutional state, the experiences derived from the affirmation of totalitarian regimes during the interwar period, the birth of international institutions during the 20th century and especially after 1945. The attention will be focused on the processes of transformation/erosion/adaptation that have characterized the state in the period of time taken into consideration.
The second part of the course retraces the history of the integration process that has characterized the European continent (first in its Western part, then in its entirety) after the Second World War. The process will be reconstructed from its historical origins, with particular attention to the institutional changes that have influenced its evolution, and to the role played in this context by political, economic, and social forces. Drawing from the lessons of the first part, the second will delve into the dynamic interaction between the national states that gave rise to the integration process and the supranational institutions to which they have delegated powers and prerogatives. Compared to previous finalist narratives, which considered the decline of the nation state to be inevitable, the course intends to provide a more balanced reading of the entire process and of the tensions it has generated, also in the light of the current crisis of European institutions.

TEACHING METHODS
The course alternates lectures with class discussions. External experts will take part in some lessons of the second part. Seminar activities with will depend on the number of students attending the course.
The lectures will be given both face-to-face and streaming; the registrations will be available at the Moodle webpage of the course.

Examination Methods
The exam will consist of an oral interview aimed at verifying the ability of exposure, the mastery of the terminology acquired and the ability to link together the topics of the course. The questions will focus both on the topics covered during the lessons and on the two manuals.

Double degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
