Program

The course diachronically explores some of Western Europe's principal typologies of archival records. It considers the main palaeographic and diplomatistic features, aiming to provide students with appropriate interpretive means to comprehend and analyse the different types of records throughout the medieval period.
The first part (lessons 1-6) is introductory; it provides some fundamental elements of palaeography and a general outline of diplomatics. It specifically explores the relationships between diplomatics and medieval historiography, emphasising the early medieval period. More in-depth analysis will focus on a documentary sample chosen from seventh- to tenth-century Western Europe, with specific attention to the documentary sources of central-northern Italy in the same period.
The second part (lessons 7-12) focuses on the Veronese archival records from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries kept in the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano. Through the analysis of written documents and the profiles of single notaries, it will observe, on the one hand, the formal and structural changes of land conveyances and court records; on the other one, the interpretive and editorial issues arising from the analysis of the extensive undated documentation of the archive.
The third part (lessons 13-18) will consist of a series of theoretical-practical lessons on loose records (13-14th centuries) and registers (14-15th centuries) kept in the State Archive of Verona, focusing specifically on the formal and structural features of wills. This module will include (1) a series of practical exercises in reading, interpreting, and transcribing documents and (2) a visit to the State Archive.

Double degree

The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.

Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.

The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
