Learning outcomes

The course aims to introduce the topics of sociology of health from the point of view of three perspectives: micro, meso and macro sociological.
The multiple connections between subjectivity, social dimensions and health will be described and analyzed.
At the end of the course, the student is able to analyze the social and socio-economic determinants of illness, the medicalizing aspects of contemporary society, the various aspects of illness, also with reference to global health and social distress.

Program

- the welfare state: birth, systems, transformations and prospects for the future
- the main sociological paradigms of health (Weber, Durkheim, Parsons, Merton, Goffman, Garfinkel)
- birth of the sociology of health and historical context of reference
- health, disease, medicine: the sociological view through the contemporary world
- the social representations of the disease and the sick individual
- the doctor-patient relationship
- emerging theoretical models in the sociology of health
