At the end of the module, students will be able to critically analyze the dynamics of the job market for PhD students and post-docs, both inside and outside the academic context. They will be able to identify and enhance the transferable skills acquired during the PhD course, including technical and transversal ones, such as project management, data analysis and effective communication. Furthermore, they will be able to consciously orient themselves among the different professional opportunities available, planning their career path strategically, both in the academic sector and in the extra-academic sector, such as industry, public administration or consultancy.

Among these obstacles, some experts have criticized the fact that institutions do not track and report the employment outcomes of their PhD students and postdocs, both inside and outside of academia. A PhD inevitably provides a set of transferable skills across different sectors. These may include technical skills specific to the sector, but more importantly, soft skills such as project management, data analysis and effective communication. Whether one chooses to use these skills in research with a postdoctoral fellowship, to move out of academia for a role in industrial research, to enter the public sector or to work as a freelance consultant, it is essential to have all the tools necessary to steer one's career in the direction desired. It is therefore clear that PhDs need to be provided with all the tools necessary for orientation, so that they can explore different possible outlets both in academia and in the labour market.
