Action Research is a research method that differs from the 'classical' research paradigm as it does not separate the moment of research from the moment of action/intervention to promote change. For this characteristic it is particularly suited to grasp the complexity and changes of organizational, community and social phenomena. The aim of the seminar is to describe the development of Action Research (and Participatory Action Research), illustrating its historical roots and basic concepts. In order to deepen the concepts described in “Action Research: Theoretical framework and practical examples (part 1)”, some typical techniques of Participatory Action Research will be presented. Among these, particular attention will be paid to: 1) Photovoice, a methodology of research and social action that aims to deepen the problems of a community, stimulate participation and activate change, involving members of groups/organizations/communities, stakholders, policy-makers and institutional decision-makers; 2) World Café, a conversational process for fostering constructive dialogue, accessing collective intelligence, and creating innovative possibilities for action. Practical guidance will be provided on how to implement a Photovoice/World Café project, from the preparation to the implementation of the process. In order to deepen the concepts described in “Action Research: Theoretical framework and practical examples (part 1)”, some typical techniques of Participatory Action Research will be presented.
