Prospettiva teoriche in sociologia: il problema del senso comune (2024/2025)
Learning objectives
The two seminars aim to provide a general yet accurate overview of the recent epistemological and ontological debate in the field of social theory.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prior knowledge required
Program
The seminar, divided into two parts of three hours each, focuses on the problematic relationship between sociology and common sense.
In the first part, more epistemologically oriented, we will focus on the often blurred and problematic distinction between these two forms of knowledge. Here some questions we will try to answer: what grounds the scientific nature of sociology? How can sociology grasp aspects of collective life that elude the gaze of common sense? What’s the difference between a social problem and a sociological problem?
In the second part, we will briefly examine some analyses proposed by Erving Goffman, Harold Garfinkel, and Randall Collins to illustrate the results that can be achieved by a sociological approach that turns common sense into main object of its research program.
