Learning outcomes
The workshop provides an historical overview about manuscript illumination and an introduction to its main research topics. Firslty, the workshop will present the principal techniques and contexts of manuscript production. Secondly, it will illustrate the evolution of the illuminated manuscript between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance from a material, stylistic and iconographic point of view. Thirdly, the workshop will show how the different typologies of illustrative scheme relate to the specific function of each illuminated manuscript. With that regard, a special attention will be paid to the text-image relationship. Finally, the workshop will approach some research topics regarding the rise of historical study of the illuminated manuscript and the taste and collecting of illuminations in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
