Learning outcomes
The course has been designed together with the ERC Graph-East Latin as an alien script research group.
The aim of the course is to provide some of the necessary tools for the interpretation of artworks and Latin epigraphy in the Middle East between the 11th and 15th centuries. The first lecture will be consecrated to the presentation of the course and the Graph-East project (objectives, members and research methods) and to a brief introduction to epigraphy in relation to art history. The second, third and fourth lectures will focus on the examination of some monuments in relation to the Latin populations of Jerusalem, Cyprus, Constantinople and Greece.
Between the fifth and the seventh lesson the students, divided into groups, will analyze a work of art through a series of texts provided by the teacher. Each of these lessons will be divided into two main moments: first, each group will present a text related to the object of study; then a discussion, moderated by the teacher, will be opened on the main concepts that emerged in the presentations.
The last lesson will be devoted to the individual presentation of a work of art chosen by the student. A written paper will be produced for the final assessment.
By the end of the course the student will have mastered the basic definitions of artistic relations between East and West in the Middle Ages. They will also have acquired an overview of medieval Latin epigraphy in the eastern Mediterranean and will be able to consider the processes of artistic and cultural transmissions.
No Latin or Greek language ability is required.
