Program

The course will present and discuss topics and tools related to English language teaching and learning methodology in primary and pre-primary schools. This will include approaches, techniques, tools, and activities related to developing foreign language skills for this age group, particularly listening and speaking, and the selection and preparation of teaching materials for English in this school context. Topics covered include: young learners' characteristics; English, Englishes, and ELF: implications for the language classroom; Skills: Listening and speaking - drama and storytelling; songs/chants and game activities; reading and writing; vocabulary and grammar; and creating, adapting, and evaluating activities for young language learners. Lessons and activities are taught in English. Any suggestions regarding study materials: The materials provided by the teacher (Power Point presentations, reference articles, and essays reviewed during lessons, as well as in-depth reading) may be supplemented with the texts listed below. Didactic methods

The workshop is conducted in seminar format, with concepts and reference materials introduced by the instructor, followed by collaborative practical exercises in pairs or small groups, with individual input. The seminars are complemented by online materials and activities, supported by the University's Moodle platform. Lectures and activities are held in English. Any suggestions regarding study materials: the materials provided by the instructor (Power Point presentations, reference articles and essays reviewed during lectures, and in-depth readings) can be supplemented with the texts listed below. The study materials will be available in the Moodle space; for any remedial work related to Covid, students are invited to contact the instructor by email.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is oral, in English, and includes a discussion of the Personal Learning Portfolio developed during the workshop, including an explanation of the choices made in designing activities and materials, including reference to the relevant language teaching approaches. Prerequisite for taking the exam: English Language Certification at Level B2 – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The exam evaluation is expressed in thirtieths (/30); the evaluation will take into account in particular the ability to: ● articulate with precision and significance the contents of the Personal Learning Portfolio ● connect the activities contained in the Personal Learning Portfolio in the relationship between theory and practice, justifying the choices made in a critical-reflective way

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The exam is oral, in English, and includes a discussion of the Personal Learning Portfolio developed during the workshop, with arguments regarding the choices made in designing activities and materials, also in reference to the relevant language teaching approaches. Evaluation criteria: The exam grade is expressed in thirtieths (/30); the evaluation will take into particular consideration the ability to: ● articulate the contents of the Personal Learning Portfolio with precision and significance ● connect the activities contained in the Personal Learning Portfolio in the relationship between theory and practice, justifying the choices made in a critical-reflective manner.
