Learning objectives
Traditionally, academic courses have examined sensation and perception by studying vision, hearing, touch, smell, and taste in isolation. This laboratory offers a different, more contemporary perspective: a multisensory approach. Here, sensory and perceptual processes are studied as active, interconnected systems rather than as passive, independent senses.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No basic prerequisites are needed
Program
In everyday life, there are various multisensory experiences, that is, events in which the information received from the various sense organs are mutually integrated. Starting from the reading and commentary of scientific articles regarding a multisensory experience such as wine tasting, other experiences of multisensory integration will be examined. Specifically, the following topics will be covered: - synesthesia; - the influence of sound on sight; - the influence of music on taste; - the link between smell and language; - taste and flavor.
