Learning objectives
Objectives of the course are: (1) knowledge of actual changes in work's work, in relation to different organizational and content dimensions; (2) acquisition of the main keys to read sociology of work. By studying approaches and specific themes at the center of the sociological analysis of work, we identify concepts, interpretive modes, tools to analyze the main issues related to work. In particular, teaching will enable the student to acquire: (1) knowledge of the processes of change in the world of work, observed from the standpoint of different types of workers; (2) ability to analyze and understand the changing processes in economy and in labor market, in relation to various sectors of production of goods and services, both public and private; (3) critical analysis skills of different organizational contexts, and the connection of sociological knowledge with that of other constituent disciplines; (4) critical retrieval, interpretation and analysis of data and information (simple and complex indicators) related to changes in work; (5) ability to represent the processes studied and contextualization of specific intervention actions.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prior knowledge is required. During the initial part of the course some basic concepts will be covered.
Program
The course is divided into three parts. A first part traces the reflections made by a series of authors who have characterized the development of the sociology of work. In particular, we focus on the specificities of the sociological discipline and the contribution that it has given over the years to the interpretation of changes in work. In the second part, the various typical themes of the sociological study of work are examined (for example, the labor market, organizational models, work cultures, training, quality of work, etc.), paying particular attention to the ongoing changes and the specific conditions of the different populations involved (such as young people, women, migrants, etc.). The third part includes in-depth studies on specific topics and/or working populations carried out through laboratory exercises led by the teacher and discussions with external experts and key informants. The texts on which the final exam will focus are: - - Gosetti, G. (2024), Percorsi di sociologia del lavoro, Milano, FrancoAngeli.
- Carreri, A. and Gosetti, G. (Eds.) (2024) Interpretare il lavoro: chiavi e traiettorie, Milano, FrancoAngeli. For those participating in the lab activities, only the following parts: first part; two chapters of your choice from the second part (contexts); two chapters of your choice from the third part (themes); and two chapters of your choice from the fourth part (working populations). For those who cannot attend the lab, the exam will focus on the entire book. During the lessons the teacher will be able to provide further materials, especially in reference to updated data and results of sociological research, in order to support the interpretation of the ongoing phenomena.
