Learning outcomes
The course aims to develop the necessary nursing skills in the assessment, monitoring and clinical surveillance of the signs and symptoms of geriatric patients. Will be examined various settings, hospital, nursing home and home with the aim of providing the learner with validated tools, able to allow in each setting a correct clinical evaluation and subsequent care planning.
Because of the high prevalence of cerebrovascular and cognitive pathologies in the elderly, the course will pay particular attention to deepening these diseases both as regards the diagnostic aspect, with appropriate assessment tools, and as regards assistance. The intent is therefore to provide the learner with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge about the assessment, which will enable him to offer good health care.
Program
Neuromotor assessment: assessment of consciousness status and assessment scales, assessment of pupils, reflexes and eye movements. Physiological and pathological reflexes. Sensitivity and motility disorders, tremors and involuntary movements, paralysis, paresis, spasticity, flaccidity, atrophy and fasciculations. Disorders of walking and walking. Early indicators of stroke both at home and intra-hospital level.
Cognitive assessment: Glossary. Cognitive impairment. Memory loss. Confusional state and delirium.
Assessment and management of behavioral disorders in dementia.
Evaluation of delirium (hyperkinetic, hypokinetic, mixed) evaluation tools (CAM); prevention interventions.
Evaluation of pain in the person with cognitive decline.
DIDACTIC METHODS
Classroom meetings include the use of lectures with slides, group discussions and exercises with assessment tools.

Examination Methods
The objective of the exam consists in verifying the level of achievement of the previously indicated training objectives.
The exam consists of an oral exam with some open questions that require the student to apply concepts, theories and assessment scales learned during the study.
