Learning objectives

In accordance with the periodization adopted in our French literature courses (first year: from 1850 to today; second year: Eighteenth century and first half of the Nineteenth century; third year: Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries), this course introduces to French literature from 1700 to 1850. The course will focus on great authors and texts belonging to different literary genres, and will also improve the knowledge of the literary movements and of their historical, sociocultural, aesthetic contexts. A particular attention will be payed to the various and important aspects of the publishing industry during the period, as the course also addresses to the students of the Bachelor's degree in Languages and Literatures for Publishing and Digital Media. The course, as well as the primary and secondary bibliography, will be in French, which is intended to help students to improve their linguistic comprehension and fluency. At the end of the course, students shall therefore acquire overall knowledge of the history of French literature from 1700 to 1850 (main literary movements, authors and works), along with the capacity of applying, in French, critical and textual analysis competences to the texts presented during the course.

Program

Modulo 1 - Paola Perazzolo
The teaching, held in French, aims to provide students with an introduction to French literature of the 18th century as well as a brief presentation of the development and changes of the press throughout the century. Organized according to a chronological course, the lessons will focus on the presentation of the historico-literary context and of the main literary movements and canonical works and authors (cf. primary texts). The full reading of the texts in French and the study of the indicated textbooks and critical essays are part of the program. Students who cannot follow the course must read the texts in the recommended editions, the preface/introduction of which constitutes an integral part of the programme. They are also invited to contact the teacher to agree on the program.
The detailed program and other bibliographic details concerning the study materials will be provided at the start of the course and published online.

Module 2 - Laura Colombo
The object of the module will be the literature between 1800 and 1850, investigated from a diachronic, cultural, thematic point of view, of artistic creation and of the various aesthetic movements, without neglecting the editorial aspects, through coherent paths and significant passages by fundamental authors such as Chateaubriand , Mme de Staël, Lamartine, Vigny, Hugo, Musset, Sand, Stendhal. Alongside the genres of poetry, theatre, journalism and criticism, the novel will also be the object of study through the work of Balzac, in particular the complete reading of Le Bal de Sceaux. Apart from this volume by Balzac, to be purchased, all the other passages and the critical bibliography will be uploaded to Moodle, with the relative indications for attending and non-attending students. The course notes will be an integral part of the program, and non-attending students are kindly requested to consult the indications on Moodle and to contact the teacher for the relative details on the program.
