The course will move from two points of view: that of the librarian and that of the user who both move in the interactive digital documentary environment.

Program

This course aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of librarianship and bibliography, and the fundamental elements related to the representation of documentary information in a digital environment. The focus will be on sources from the humanities. Important topics include principles and history of bibliography, practices of indexing documents in online information retrieval tools, how media are chosen for inclusion in databases and search engines, and how digital methods affect search results. We will discuss cataloguing in leading public libraries in Italy and the anglophone world, commercial search engines, publishers and aggregators, universities and their repositories, and digital humanities methods. The concept of information literacy and how to acquire and maintain it in the fast-changing digital era will be explored. The course will include practical exercises in applying the principles learned to the task of making bibliographical searches and creating a bibliography for a personal research project.
