Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the main tools, methods and problems of librarianship and bibliography increasingly related to the world of digital. The course will move from two points of view: that of the librarian and that of the user who both move in the interactive digital documentary environment.

Program
This course aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of librarianship and bibliography, and the fundamental elements related to the representation of documentary information in a digital environment. The focus will be on sources from the humanities. Important topics include principles and history of bibliography, practices of indexing documents in online information retrieval tools, how media are chosen for inclusion in databases and search engines, and how digital methods affect search results. We will discuss cataloguing in leading public libraries in Italy and the anglophone world, commercial search engines, publishers and aggregators, universities and their repositories, and digital humanities methods. The concept of information literacy and how to acquire and maintain it in the fast-changing digital era will be explored. The course will include practical exercises in applying the principles learned to the task of making bibliographical searches and creating a bibliography for a personal research project.

Learning assessment procedures
Examination consists of a final oral interview aimed at assessing students’ understanding of the topics covered during the course, knowledge of the recommended reading, and ability to use the acquired knowledge to present an argument.
Evaluation criteria
The oral discussion-interview will verify the student’s ability to communicate what has been acquired with appropriate language and expression, with adequate critical and methodological skills.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Examination is not divided into parts and therefore the final mark will be determined by the oral exam.
