Learning objectives

The course will furnish students with the fundamental concepts required for an understanding of the book as a material and historical object. Knowledge: 1) The book as a product for conveying ideas from the second half of the fifteenth century until the middle of the twentieth century. 2) The techniques of book making that were continually evolving and intersecting with political, economic and, not least, cultural interests. 3) The book as both a manufactured and social object which over the course of time has undergone transformations in medium and content that testify to the changes taking place. Skills: At the end of the course, the students will be able to describe and contextualize in time and space the leading actors of the world of publishing, including their contributions to the developments and stages of publishing history, and to the intellectual renewal of European society.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prerequisites are required

Program

The course will analyze the book as a product of conveying ideas from the second half of the 14th century up to the present days. Techniques for building books have continually evolved, crossing with political, economic, and ultimately cultural interests. The book will be presented as an artefact, but also as a social object that over the span of decades has undergone into format and content transformations, shaping new ideas and influencing the intellectual renewal of Europe for which the publishing world still plays an essential role.

Bibliography

Visualizza la bibliografia con Leganto, strumento che il Sistema Bibliotecario mette a disposizione per recuperare i testi in programma d'esame in modo semplice e innovativo.

Didactic methods

The contents of the course will be presented through lectures, but educational outings will also be organized aimed at learning about the processes of book production. Industry experts will also be invited to lectures to understand the publishing sector and all the professions that revolve around it. Furthermore, the individual reception service managed by the teacher by appointment is available throughout the academic year

Learning assessment procedures

Written test divided in test questions. The written test is intended to verify the acquired knowledge and contextualize the subject.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Each question is worth 1 point and incorrect questions will not be evaluated. If the student reaches the score of 30/30 he will have the right to agree with the teacher an appointment for an oral question aimed at obtaining honors.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be out of thirty and will be the result of the sum of all correct answers.
