Period
Secondo semestre dal Mar 7, 2022 al Jun 10, 2022.
Learning outcomes
The course is dedicated to the definition of the concept of BIOREFINERY and its impact in the field of industrial biotechnology and bioeconomy in general. The three main steps of a biorefinery process (feedstock preparation, fermentation, down-stream processing for product recovery) will be the basis of the teaching activity. Several examples of fine chemicals production from dedicated crops or agro-/industrial-/civil- waste will be given during the course
Program
Program:
- The concept of biorefinery for the valorisation of biomass of different origin (dedicated crops, refuse, waste) into bio-molecules of economic value in the framework of circular bioeconomy
- Feedstock preparation (pre-treatments) by means of chemical-physical and biological processes
- Biotecnological processes for the conversion of biomass of different origin into high added value bio-based products (type of process, type of bioreactor, facilities, monitoring)
- Down stream processing for recovery and purification of bio-molecules of interest
- Case studies and techno-economic analysis of some industrial applications

Examination Methods
The final oral examination is dedicated to the verification of applying knowledge and understanding by means of a description of a train of operation. The understanding of the global policy framework will be also verified during the examination.
