CONTAMINATION LAB 

The Contamination Lab Verona (CLab Verona) is an experiential course with modules on innovation and enterprise culture that offers the opportunity to work in teams with students from all areas to solve challenges set by companies and organisations.

Upon completion of a CLab, students will be entitled to receive 6 CFU (D- or F-type credits).

PLEASE NOTE: In order to be admitted to any teaching activities, including those of your choice, you must be enrolled in the academic year in which the activities in question are offered. Students who are about to graduate in the December and April sessions are therefore advised NOT to undertake extracurricular activities in the new academic year in which they are not enrolled, as these graduation sessions are valid for students enrolled in the previous academic year. Therefore, students who undertake an activity in an academic year in which they are not enrolled will not be granted CFU credits.

Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to understand what digital platforms are and how they operate and what market equilibria emerge depending on the type of platform and the behavior of the participants. In particular, the student will be able to understand the strategies adopted by the platforms, often very distinct from those followed in more traditional contexts, and how these can influence the behavior of consumers and participating firms. Specific emphasis will be placed on the role of information asymmetries and market mechanisms to reduce them, such as the emergence of reputation and certification, as resolving mechanisms alternative to the regulator.

Program

Digital platforms controlled by Alibaba, Amazon, Facebook, Netflix, and Uber have transformed the way we do business and also people’s everyday lives. The first part of the course is about market intermediation and the role of digital platforms in favoring the interaction between buyers and sellers. It aims to understand the economic principles governing how these platforms operate. The presentation of case studies provides key concepts such as how platforms manage network effects and which price and non-price strategies platforms choose.
The second part of the course investigates other aspects related to digital platforms, such as the interdependences between digital and traditional labor markets, new perspectives on regulation and competition law, gender issues in platform economics, and cross-country differences in the use of platforms.
