Learning objectives

The course provides students with a rigorous scientific language based on a logical-mathematical deductive reasoning; moreover, it aims to furnish some analytical tools and basic mathematical models to deal quantitatively with the treatment of economic and business problems. In particular, the course yields the classical arguments from Mathematical Analysis (differential and integral calculus, optimization) and Linear Algebra, which constitute an effective tool for analyzing economic and business phenomena. At the end of the lessons, the student will have to demonstrate that he has acquired the ability to critically review the concepts encountered in the course and to apply methods, tools and mathematical models.

Didactic methods

The course includes 84 hours of lessons and exercises for a total of 9 ECTS.
There are also 3 hours per week, on Fridays from 9:00 to 12:00, of practice/tutoring/taking tests in preparation for the written test.

Learning assessment procedures

The assessment methods of the profit exams aim to promote the acquisition of reasoning and communication skills that ensure the ability to validly follow a master's degree course or to enter the workplace.
The exam includes:
1. Completion of closed multiple-choice quizzes available on the course's e-learning page. These quizzes, which are not mandatory, take place on Friday mornings (9:00 -12:00 in the Aula Magna) and assign a maximum of 2 bonus points with the following methods:
For those who complete a number of quizzes greater than or equal to 75%:
with an average score greater than or equal to 75%, 2 bonus points will be assigned,
with an average score greater than or equal to 50% and less than 75%, 1 bonus point will be assigned.
For those who complete a number of quizzes greater than or equal to 50% and less than 75%:
with an average score greater than or equal to 75%, 1 bonus point will be assigned,
with an average score greater than or equal to 50% and less than 75%, 0.5 bonus points will be awarded.
2. Completion of tasks given by the teacher during the course. These tasks, which are not mandatory, also take place on Friday mornings (9:00 -12:00 in the Great Hall) and award a maximum of 1 bonus point.
3. Written test with multiple-choice answers, composed as follows: 20 questions: 1 point for each correct answer, 0 points for each unanswered question, -0.5 points for each incorrect answer. The test lasts one hour. In particular, the multiple-choice questions are designed to verify basic knowledge, especially practical knowledge, of the logical-mathematical aspects presented during the lessons.
4. Written test, which is accessed if the sum of the scores of points 1, 2, and 3 is greater than or equal to 12, structured as follows:
Two structured exercises on the topics covered during the lessons. Maximum score 10 points.
The test lasts one hour.
5. Oral exam, which certifies theoretical knowledge (definitions, theorems, demonstrations, ...), which is accessed if the score of point 4 is greater than or equal to 6.
An intermediate assessment test is planned (4-6 November as per the teaching activities calendar). This test consists of 10 multiple choice questions (see point 3) and 1 structured exercise (see point 4) and focuses on the topics of the program covered up to that point.
The intermediate test is optional and is valid only for the winter exam session (2 exam sessions).
Only those who have performed and passed according to the methods of points 1 and 2 will be able to participate in the intermediate test.
The intermediate test is introduced to encourage the student to systematically and assiduously study the subject as the various topics are covered and therefore to improve the learning process.

Evaluation criteria

The quiz and written tests are based on the way the exercises are performed and the accuracy of the results.
The evaluation of the oral test is based on the following criteria: - depth and breadth of the knowledge acquired;
- language skills;
- ability to connect knowledge in a systemic way.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

1. Written part grade: sum of points 1,2,3,4 of the exam modalities (max 33 points).
2. Oral part grade (which can confirm or modify the score obtained in point 1.)
