SECS-P/07 - BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND ACCOUNTING STUDIES

Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to analyse international business and management in a comprehensive and complete framework, presenting the challenges of globalization. The course in divided into two parts: A and B. In the first part (part A) after introducing the relevance of culture, politics, law and business ethics students will learn the main economic systems and trends. They will understand the benefits of the main regional economic integration and the importance of FDI. In the second part of the course (part B) students will understand the influence of globalization to companies and their economy at a micro level point of view. Internal processes from production to logistic, from sales and marketing to human resource management will be analysed. Students will learn and discuss about the organization and management of both multinational enterprises (MNE) and SMEs, that are the backbone of Italian economy. The course will consider the internationalization process both on the strategic and operative point of view, giving students the ability for preparing a detailed analysis on both costs and revenues. Terminology, economic and organizational theories, adequate examples and case study will be given to students (also beginners) in order to approach at the topic with a "real" holistic way. At the end of the course the student will be able: to argue about main opportunities, threats and risks associated to international business; to design and discuss potential paths for developing international business both under the strategic and operative point of view; to critically appraise the benefits deriving from internationalization for big companies and SMEs.

Didactic methods

The topics of the course will be discussed in a set of front lessons (according to the timetable of the course). One or more invited speakers will present case studies or topics related to internationalization or global business. Students (both attending and non-attending) will find integrative materials in a specific FOLDER of the course in MYUNIVR platform. Students (both ATTENDING and NON ATTENDING) must study the FULL TEXTBOOK (WILD) excluding Chapters 9 and 10 only. In MYUNIVR platform students will find: a) the index of the textbook, slides of the lectures, b) additional materials or slides, c) text of the TWO compulsory project works; d) a few open questions and multiple choice questions in order to simulate the examination, e) the timetable of additional lectures on Business Plan MODULE (not compulsory). During the lessons, students may be asked to discuss together a specific business case (individually or in groups). The course will be held between October and December. Extraordinary, for this year, VIDEO RECORDINGS of the lectures will be available within 10 days (in a specific folder of the MYUNIVR course page). The teacher is available for Q&A: 1. at the end of the lectures; 2. in a specific meeting with students (see institutional webpage).

Learning assessment procedures

The language of the examination is ENGLISH. Online registration is required 3 days before the examination date (without registration it will not be possible to access to the exam).
The first dates of the final examination are in January/February. The exam is done via moodle platform IN PRESENCE in a university room with PC (except extraordinary motivations). Student Personal credientials (ID + PW) are required to access to http://esamionline.univr.it

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The examination intends to verify: a. the preparation of the student over the topics mentioned in the program and b. its ability to apply models and solutions in a "real word". Students, preferably in groups of 3 persons) must deliver via moodle 2 project work 7 days before the examination. To do the moodle exam students must be enrolled 4 days before the examination using their personal student area (please check the enrollment).
ERASMUS/World Wide STUDENTS are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of the lectures (September/October).

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

For both ATTENDING and NON ATTENDING STUDENTS, the examination is composed of TWO parts A) 2 project works (1/2 of the final grade) and B) moodle exam (1/2 of the final grade).
The first part of the examination (project work) is done delivering in the elearning platforrm (MYUNIVR) 2 project works that will focus on A.1 Country and market analysis (5 marks) and A.2 MNE and FDI (10 marks). In MYUNIVR more details on the contents of PW1 and PW2.
Moodle exam B) includes B.1) 5 multiple choice questions (each question gives 1 mark, no negative marks in case of the wrong answer). B.2) 2 Open questions (each question gives 5 marks).
After passing the written examination and the project works the student MAY ask for an additional oral examination to modify (max +/- 3 marks) the previous score.
The maximum score for the examination is 30 marks (minimum of 18 marks to pass).
BUSINESS PLAN MODULE (2 ECTS ) - 2 more marks may be given to students that have PASSED the BUSINESS PLAN MODULE. The BP module, which requires practical project work in groups, is planned between November and December for maximum of 20 students.
