Introduction to the Study of the English language

The course will provide an introduction to study of the English language.


Module: Modulo avanzato

This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of translation from English, with special attention to the field of education and social services.

The main topics covered will be:

-an introduction to the various levels of linguistic analysis
- the domain of phonetics and phonology
- the domain of morphology (word structure an word formation processes)
- the domain of semantics (sense relations, levels of meaning, the English lexicon, resources for the study of the English Lexicon)

Examination Methods

Module: Modulo introduttivo

The exam will consist in a two-hour written test in English, including questions and exercises on the topics covered during the course.

LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE REQUIRED

a) LISS Students: Level ALTE B1 (Complete test). Students must obtain a level B1 certificate in English, before sitting for the exam, and must show the certificate to the teacher on the day of the exam.

b) Students of Other Degree Courses: Level ALTE A2. Students must obtain a level A2 certificate in English, before sitting for the exam, and must show the certificate to the teacher on the day of the exam. The mark obtained in the A2, however, will not be computed in the final mark of the exam.
Please notice that the typology of the course presuppose an intermediate level of competence in English, especially in relation to written competence and comprehension, since the language of the course is English.
