Learning objectives

The course is intended to provide the student with the knowledge of the basic notions of the international legal system and of the related technical and terminological instruments.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to elaborate on legal issues concerning the main topics of the subject, in both oral and written forms, using an appropriate and specific vocabulary, reaching independent judgement on actual cases, adopting a proper methodology, based on continuous learning and knowledge updating.

Program

During the lectures (30 hours, 5 CFU) the following topics of an institutional nature will be covered: • International law: general notions, theories on its legal foundation • The formation and transformation of international law: customary law, treaty law , unilateral acts • The subjects and actors of international law: the State, international organizations, other subjects. • The assessment and application of the rules of international law • Non-compliance, illegality and international responsibility of States • International disputes: concept, prevention, peaceful solution of disputes • The coercive implementation of the rules of international law: self-defense, countermeasures , • The use of force: the prohibition of the use of force, the exceptions to the prohibition of the use of force, legitimate defense • Substantive law: international human law, law of the sea (…) During the laboratory lessons (12 hours, 1 CFU), specific issues of international law will be explored from an operational point of view.

Didactic methods

The course takes place mainly through frontal lessons held by the teacher: - 30 hours (5 CFU) of frontal lessons, of an institutional nature, dedicated to the transmission of the fundamental notions of the subject; - 12 hours (1 CFU) of laboratory in remote mode, dedicated to the analysis, from an operational point of view, of specific procedural institutes. The use of the e-learning platform for distance learning is envisaged, essentially for the purpose of integrating the possibilities of real participation of the participants in the course. The lessons, in compliance with the University guidelines, will be held in presence. Students are invited to actively participate in the lessons.

Learning assessment procedures

- Attending students can decide whether to take the exam in written form (in the first session following the end of lessons) or in oral form. The written exam will be structured as follows: 11 multiple choice questions, 1 short answer question (choice between two) and 1 extended answer question (choice between two). The oral exam will consist of three questions. -
Non-attending students will only be able to take the oral exam. Three questions will be asked during the interview.
Erasmus students
Attending Erasmus students will have the opportunity to write a paper on a topic agreed with the teacher.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

During the exam, the following will be assessed: 1) the degree of knowledge, by the student, of the institutes being studied; 2) understanding of the main problems posed by international law; 3) language skills; 4) the critical capacity that the student is able to exercise on relevant issues.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final mark is expressed in thirtieths and refers to the test considered as a whole.

Type D and Type F activities

Le attività che consentono l’acquisizione dei crediti riservati alle attività formative a libera scelta dello studente (TAF D) sono le seguenti:

  • Un insegnamento previsto nell’elenco delle attività formative TAF D) allegato al piano didattico del corso di laurea in Servizi Giuridici per impese, amministrazioni e no-profit;
  • Un insegnamento attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio di Giurisprudenza ;
  • Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio di Giurisprudenza;
  • Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche; 
  • Un insegnamento previsto dall’Offerta Formativa di Ateneo, non impartito nell’ambito dei corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio di Giurisprudenza: il riconoscimento dei crediti acquisiti sarà subordinato alla preventiva presentazione di coerenti programmi formativi valutati dalla Commissione istruttoria per la didattica e approvati dal Collegio didattico.
  • Attività formative organizzate dai singoli docenti del Collegio di Giurisprudenza o del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche: previa approvazione del Collegio ad esse verrà attribuito, dopo un’apposita verifica, un credito per ogni 6 ore di frequenza obbligatoria;
  • Attività formative che implicano la partecipazione a convegni o seminari organizzati sotto il “logo” del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche o dell’Ateneo: devono essere preventivamente approvate dal Collegio di Giurisprudenza indicando un docente di riferimento del Collegio di Giurisprudenza ovvero del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche. Un credito per ogni giornata di convegno o di seminario si acquisisce dopo apposita verifica che dimostri l’avvenuta fruizione culturale del tema del convegno o del seminario.


Le attività che consentono l’acquisizione dei crediti riservati alle ulteriori attività formative (TAF F) sono le seguenti:
• Informatica (3 cfu)
• Stage;
• Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio di Giurisprudenza;
• Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche.

Internships

Internships are aimed at enabling students to gain direct knowledge of the world of work and to acquire specific professional skills.

Internships are carried out under the responsibility of an individual lecturer, and can be carried out in professional firms, public administration bodies and companies recognised by the University of Verona.

Any CFU credits gained by doing internships will be recognised and recorded by the University in accordance with the relevant University regulations in force (Regolamento d’Ateneo per il riconoscimento dei crediti maturati negli stage universitari).
