Program
TITLE OF THE COURSE: "Dialectic" and "life" in 19th century German philosophy. The course focuses on 19th century German philosophy, illustrated through two major thematic areas: dialectics and life. The conceptions of dialectics of Immanuel Kant, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Karl Marx will thus be exposed, with reference to passages of their works selected by the teacher and analytically commented. The life philosophies of Arthur Schopenhauer and the young Friedrich Nietzsche will then be introduced, following the same method of textual analysis and reconstruction of the discursive constellations. Descriptions for large spans and large syntheses descended from above will be avoided, rather starting from interpretations based on textual references, to arrive at the doctrinal cores of each author. The intention is thus to pass from the particular to the general, from the level of analysis to that of synthesis, concretely showing a criterion of historical interpretation. The lessons will examine excerpts from: I. Kant, Critique of pure reason, 1787 (II ed.); GWF Hegel, Phenomenology of the Spirit, 1807; Id., Science of logic, 1816; Id., Outlines of philosophy of law, 1820; Id., Encyclopedia of Philosophical Sciences, 1830 (third edition). K. Marx, Critique of the Hegelian philosophy of public law, 1843; Id., Economic-philosophical manuscripts of 1844; Id., Thesis on Feuerbach, 1845. A. Schopenhauer, The world as will and representation, 1859 (III edition, containing the Supplements). F. Nietzsche, On the usefulness and harm of history for life, 1874. The students will then be required to study, in the text by Lucio Cortella indicated in the Leganto system, some voices of twentieth-century philosophy (Husserl, Heidegger, Wittgenstein , Croce, Gentile, Horkheimer, Adorno, Sartre).
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The course will consist of lectures which will be alternated, where possible, with discussions led by the teacher and short reports by the students (optional) on previously agreed topics. The plurality of educational paths is designed according to the student, who will be provided with the widest possible spectrum of learning opportunities in order to guarantee, in presence or remotely, the acquisition of both the knowledge and the skills set out in the objectives formative. The lessons will be recorded and published on the moodle platform.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam covers both the topics covered in class and some authors of the twentieth century. In the first part, it is necessary to demonstrate knowledge of the contents of the passages studied and the main lines of the proposed commentary. In the second part it is necessary to study the following authors in the text indicated in the bibliography: Phenomenological-hermenetuic thought (Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Gadamer, Derrida) and dialectical thought (Croce, Gentile, Lukács, Marcuse, Horkheimer, Adorno , Habermas), finally, Ludwig Wittgenstein. In the third part, the complete reading of F. Nietzsche, The utility and the harm of history for life will be required.
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation derives from the verification of the learning of the contents, of the elaboration capacities and of the competences in the use of the disciplinary language.
