Learning outcomes

The initial part of the course provides an introduction to competition law from the perspectives of economics, history and international comparisons. The course then focuses in greater detail on the European competition law regime and the most important rules and principles that apply in this field. An introduction to the EU merger control rules is also provided. A substantial part of the course is devoted to the study and discussion of concrete cases.

This module of the course (“EU Competition Law”) is worth 5 credit hours. It covers EU competition law, and it is taught in English. The Industrial law component of the course (4 credit hours) is taught in Italian (see Italian version of the webpage). If students so desire, they have the option of following only the competition law component.
The lectures provide a detailed analysis of the relevant legal framework and jurisprudence that constitute the EU competition law regime, with emphasis on the competition rules addressed to commercial enterprises. A broad range of topics are covered, including:
- Introduction to the concept of “competition”
- The prohibition of restrictive agreements and other practices, and the possibility of exemption
- The abuse of dominance
- The application of the EU competition rules to the Member States
- The “federal” system of competition law in Europe
- The institutions and procedures relevant to the application of the EU competition rules
- Regulation 1/2003 and its main features
- The EU merger control regime
