SPS/08 - SOCIOLOGY OF CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION

Learning outcomes

The main aims of the course are:
1. to present the main theories of socialization, providing the conceptual tools necessary to the description of the mechanisms that allow individuals to build a social identity;
2. to present the school as a social institution, first giving special emphasis to its role in cultural transmission and in socialization of individuals, and secondly providing the tools for analysis of its effects on the processes of social selection, especially with reference to the Italian society.

Program

First part: 1. The socialization of child in the psychology of Piaget and its sociological developments; 2. The socialization in the cultural anthropology and in the functionalism; 3. The socialization as incorporation of habitus; 4. The socialization as social construction of reality; 5. A sociological theory of identity; 6. The dynamics of professional and social identities.
Second Part: 1. Schools as social institutions; 2. Schooling in the industrialized world; 3. Schools and cultural transmission; 4. Schools and socialization; 5. Schools and social selection: opportunity; 6. Schools and social selection: inequality; 7. Teaching and learning in comparative perspective.
