Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide the students with the method and the instruments for understanding theatre as an aesthetic phenomenon and for the analysis of the art of performing with respect to the historical evolution of theatre and to its cultural context.

Program

Contents:
Tragedy from classical times to the 17th Century. The course will examine the origins, the history, the themes, the literary and performative forms of tragic genre and some of the most important aesthetic theories that have accompanied its development. We will follow its evolution from Greek to Roman times and explore its revival in 16th and 17th Century Europe, with particular regard to the Italian, English and French production of the modern period. We will analyse texts by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Seneca, Giraldi Cinzio, Shakespeare and Racine. The analysis will not be limited to the literary aspects but will also take into account the modes of scenic representation and the function of theatre in the different social and historical contexts.
