The course aims to enhance understanding of the historical phenomenon of schismatic Churches within the Catholic Church, particularly by examining the making and consolidation of the Donatist Church in North Africa, in the IV century, as a case in point.

The aim of the course is to provide students with the skills to carry out individual research on Medieval History.

Introduction to Donatism and to the main documents concerning its origin and consolidation, particularly through the examination of the anti-Donatist work by Optatus of Milevis.

Examination Methods

Students must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the subject and texts presented in class. Optatus of Milevis’s work will be read in L. Dattrino’s Italian translation.

Written paper (ca. 15/20 pages) and oral exam.The paper must be submittet one week before the exam.
