Learning outcomes The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge on general aspects of communication and human language. In particular basic knowledge will be provided to illustrate the physiology of vocal production, describing the operation of the phono-articulatory organs, the auditory perception mechanisms and how CNS is involved in this process.

Syllabus The following concepts will be discussed: ➢ Linguistic and communicative competence ➢Communication: definition, parameters and degrees of sophistication, the communication channel definition ➢Verbal and nonverbal communication, proxemics, the haptic, the suprasegmental traits. ➢Anatomical and physiological basis of speech and language: ° Input mechanisms: the parameters of auditory perception, the acoustic optimization process. ° Output mechanisms: anatomy and physiology of the phono-articulatory organs. ° CNS and cortical areas of language. The hemispheric dominance, brain plasticity, the critical periods.
