Period
Sem. 2B dal Apr 8, 2019 al Jun 1, 2019.
Learning outcomes
-(knowledge and understanding): providing in-depth knowledge of the main topics, authors and schools of ancient philosophy;
-(communication skills): training in philosophical terminology and argumentative discourse (oral as well as written);
-(applying knowledge and understanding): teaching how to deal critically with a text of ancient philosophy, how to tackle philosophical problems and concepts, also in relation to contemporary culture.
Prerequisites: Preliminary knowledge of ancient philosophy (VI century B.C. -529 A.D.) is a prerequisite (whoever does not have this competence must acquire it, or improve the one already possessed). On the other hand, knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin is not required, even if it is a facilitation. Important terms in ancient languages will always be transliterated and translated. The study of terminology and the close reading of texts will be of core importance.
Program
Title: "Eros and Philosophy in Plato's Symposium"
The course examines the figure of Eros and its relationship with philosophical knowledge. The text to be discussed is Plato's Symposium. The multiple "ways" of Eros will be analyzed: its cosmic character, its link to the two Aphrodites (Urania and Pandemos), its demonic nature, its role in the philosophical ascent to the "good itself" (the scala amoris), its correct use in the dialogical practice of Socrates and his incorrect use by Alcibiades, and its sublimation in the virtue of the soul.
TEXT TO BE STUDIED FOR THE ORAL EXAM:
The handouts can be purchased at the copy-shop Ateneo, Lungadige Porta Vittoria, 37.
