Learning outcomes
In this course the student will acquire the following competences:
- to define the main concepts of biology
- to single out the epistemological and metaphysical problems of biological sciences
- to outline the bioethical debate within the discipline of biotechnology
Further, the student will refine the following skills:
- to analyze and discuss scientific concepts
- to plan and elaborate an argumentative text
Program
The course is divided into two main modules.
The first module deals with the epistemological and metaphysical problems of biology. The student will explore a variety of issues such as the definition and limitations of explanation in biology, the philosophical development of the concepts adaptation and function, and the analysis of fundamental notions such as natural selection, species, and evolution. The presentation and discussion of these themes will be carried out within the framework of the historical development of biology from Darwin to present.
The second module will tackle several problems of ethics of research and bioethics. After a general introduction on ethics, the norms of scientific conducts, and ethical principles in science, the student will analyze issues concerning the application of ethics to life sciences and biotechnology in contemporary society. The main themes to be discussed will be: human diversity and racism, ethics of life, manipulation and eugenics.

Examination Methods
The exam consists of two parts:
(1) Assignment in the form of a short essay on a subject to be agreed upon with the instructor.
(2) Oral exam.
