Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide examples of the contribution that philosophy can bring to the understanding of political and social problems, as an exercise in critical thinking, and to public communication.
At the end of the course the student should demonstrate:
- to have acquired a precise knowledge of the topics addressed in the course;
- to be able to expose them in an orderly and synthetic way;
- to have developed the ability to formulate its/her own judgment.
Program
DEMOCRACY, CITIZENSHIP, MIGRATIONS.
“We became aware of the existence of a right to have rights […]
only when millions of people emerged who had lost and could not regain these rights because of the new global political situation" (Hannah Arendt, 1951)
The course will discuss in a philosophical perspective the issue of western democracy and the political concept of citizenshi, which plays a crucial role in contemporary debate on migrations and citizenship. We will finally focus on the case of European Union and on Arendt's reflections about stateless people and "the right to have rights"- here understood as the right to "citizenship", quite apart from nationality.
The Program consists of three main parts:
1) the history of democracy and western political thought and the political concept of citizenship (Petrucciani, chapt. I-V and X; Zolo).
2) an introduction to the topic of contemporary migrations, with particular reference to the case of the European Union and the debate on "fortresse Europe" (Possenti, chapt. 1-3);
3) a reading of Hannah Arendt's "The declin of the nation-state and the end of the rights of men" (1951): the "right to have rights" as a right to political citizenship (Arendt; Possenti, chapt. 4 and Appendix).

METHODS
4 hours lessons on 9 afternoons.
Lectures will be based on reading and discussion of texts and video material. Students will receive the full lesson schedule and further information on the first day of class. Information and some materials will be available on Moodle (please, consult the website).
Some exercises will be proposed. Students attending with positive results at least 6 exercises can be directly admitted to the "part B" of the final exam.

Examination Methods
Written exam. Exam sessions: from January to September 2020.
STANDARD FINAL EXAM
The exam is divided into two parts: A and B.
Part A consists of a questionnaire with 3 specific open answers (60 minutes; 0-30/30).
Part B consists of 1 open answer on a general topic (90 minutes; 0-30/30).
Final evaluation: 0-30/30 (average value for the two parts).
The following will be evaluated: pertinence of the information provided in the answers; consequentiality of the arguments; ability to autonomously process the knowledge acquired.
FINAL EXAM FOR ELIGIBLE STUDENTS
During the lessons some exercises will be proposed. Students attending with positive results at least 6 exercises can be directly admitted to the "part B" of the final exam.
Final evaluation: 0-30/30.
