Learning outcomes

The course aims to convey the main competences of the philological method which constitute the basis for the edition of a text in digital format. The course also aims to provide students with the specific knowledge and methodologies to prepare a digital edition. At the end of the course the student will be able to recognize the main editorial issues concerning the publication of a text and to identify the most suitable editing methods and softwares in view of its digital edition.

Program

The course deals with the following themes: -main phases and actors that characterize the philology of printed texts; -methodological issues that digital medium implies in reconstruction, production, preservation and dissemination of literary texts; -best practices and digital tools available to humanists (digitalized images, semi-automated transcription with OCR/HTR softwares, automatic collation, algorithmic textual query, text markup, metadata, databases, epub publication, DSE web publication).
In relation to these fields and theories, some Italian literature case studies will be presented and discussed in class.
A practical part of the course will deal with digital transcription, XML Tei markup and publication of a DSE.
